Profiling Electronic Data Systems October 17, 2007

Posted by Andy Robinson in : Company Profile , add a comment

I’m adding Electronic Data Systems to my list of stock picks today (ticker EDS).  EDS is an Information Technology company (founded by Ross Perot) that offers both technology infrastructure services and applications to large multinational companies and government departments.  They are nearing the end of a restructuring and cost-cutting period, and earnings should start to benefit soon from the cost-cutting and the investments they made to get into higher-margin niche business lines.  This is a terrific value play and any investor with a couple year time horizon should be richly rewarded.  Full disclosure, I don’t own any shares at this time.  The intraday stock price at the time I’m recommending this company is $22.62.

Update on Ultra Petroleum July 3, 2007

Since I recommended Ultra Petroleum (UPL) on March 22, the stock has been on a pretty wild ride.  I picked it at $52 and it topped over $63 (a nice 21% upswing) before settling back to it’s recent levels of $56.  Today Jim Jubak from MSN Money came out with the article Natural Gas? Play the Rocky Mountains that explains the recent stock price weakness and why this stock (among other players) has terrific long-term prospects due to new pipeline capacity opening up in 2008-2009.

Let your portfolio nibble on Whole Food’s stock June 13, 2007

Whole Food’s (WFMI) is executing their growth strategy with impressive results. The past five years has seen solid revenue growth averaging just under 20%, and this trend will continue as they follow a plan of expanding their square footage more than 10% a year in both 2007 and 2008. Their purchase of major competitor Wild Oats Markets should cement their dominance in the market for natural and organic foods in a style similar to Starbuck’s branding in coffee.

A Technology Value in Maxim Integrated Products (MXIM) April 18, 2007

I had decided yesterday to recommend this stock and was somewhat chagrined to see that when the market opened Maxim had climbed over 6%. I would have preferred to have posted my article before the jump and taken some credit. Nevertheless, their valuation, profitability, and growth prospect provide a compelling case for owning this company. For the purposes of full disclosure, I do not own any shares of this company. As of 11:28 am, the intraday stock price is $31.07.

Bottom-fishing with a biotech play April 10, 2007

From a valuation standpoint, the healthcare sector is near a 10 year low. In an uncertain economic environment such as the slowdown that we’re experiencing, healthcare tends to be a safer investment because it doesn’t follow the boom and bust of the general economy. The reason for this is that demand for drugs is pretty consistent, as people will not cut back on their healthcare when times are tough. The demographics also offers a compelling case for investing in healthcare companies, since the babyboomers will have increasing medical needs as they enter retirement. Of the companies in the healthcare sector, I think it’s time to take a look at the biotech firm Amgen (AMGN).

Interview with Hyperdynamic Corp’s CEO March 30, 2007

My contributor Sona Kalra, founder of Commodity Investors, had an exclusive interview this past week with the CEO of a small oil and gas exploration company named Hyperdynamic Corporation (HDY). I am not recommending this one to my readers at this point, but I think it has some potential and I will keep my eye on it. They obtained an agreement from the government of Guinea to explore offshore, but they currently need a partner for financial backing in order to drill. They are pretty far from turning a profit, but if the financing comes through later this year and a drilling date is scheduled, I will reevaluate their potential as a high-risk, high-rewards investment. Is it time to raise your spirits with Constellation Brands? March 20, 2007

Constellation Brands (STZ) is a diversified play within the alcoholic drink industry. They are producers and distributors of popular wines, beers and liquors. Their large stock pullback recently from a high of $29.02 (on 12/29/06) down to a current price of $19.50 (as of their March 19th close) sparked my interest as an avid value investor. I believe that the current market environment and the trends within the alcoholic drink industry favor Constellation Brands if you’re an investor with a long-term horizon.

Investors looking for high-risk, high-reward opportunities may find small-cap North American energy exploration companies an interesting place to look. The industry is fraught with peril, but with prices likely to remain high in the long-term, the rewards for a successful discovery can be extraordinary.
